Maximum flexibility: This is how SD card management works in the BSS Case for the Rodecaster Video
The Rodecaster Video has a micro SD card slot on the back, which can be used to store photos or videos, for example, and use them directly for the stream.
For the optional external expansion of this slot, the BSS Case for the Rodecaster Video has an installation bay behind the power switch on the top plate.
But why isn’t it already equipped in the delivery state?
The answer lies in two technical reasons:
1. Micro SD cards don’t have a tight lock
In contrast to conventional SD cards, micro SD cards do not have a mechanical lock due to their design.
This means that although they remain stuck in the slot, they can be pulled out again with a little skill (e.g. small pliers or tweezers). This feature makes sense, as the card almost completely disappears into the housing.
However, this becomes problematic when using an adapter cable for an external slot: Even the smallest movements on the cable can interrupt the contact – so the connection is not reliable.
2. External SD card readers are not consistently detected by the Rodecaster
Micro SD card extensions are not actually provided according to the specification and are considered special solutions.
How often and in what rhythm a device queries the card slot depends on the manufacturer. With the Rodecaster, the slot is only checked once when it is switched on.
However, an externally connected card reader does not reliably pass on this information – so the device does not permanently detect whether a card is in the slot or not.

The better solution: RODE Central + USB-C
The easiest and most reliable way to transfer data is via the RODE Central software.
As soon as the Rodecaster is connected to a PC or Mac via USB-C, the inserted micro SD card can be accessed directly – without the hassle of fiddling with the small card or an external reader.
✅ Recommendation:
Insert a micro SD card with sufficient memory into the BSS case once when installing the Rodecaster and then use RODE Central to manage and display the data.
The installation shaft for future expansions
The installation bay is designed for standard micro SD card readers. If the manufacturer RØDE adapts the functionality of the micro SD card interface during the product life cycle of the Rodecaster Video so that inserted cards can also be reliably detected by an external reader, such a device can be easily and cost-effectively retrofitted.
